over it like a fraction or like a exponent?
Can somebody write 6c with the little 2 over the c thanks cause i cant write it on microsoft word?
Highlight the 2, then select Format:Font and click the Superscript box.
In a place like Yahoo! Answers where this formatting is not available, the standard way to write this is:
6c^2 (this is the same as saying six times c squared or six times c to the second power).
Be very careful about being clear in what you mean:
6c^3-1 is properly interpreted as "one less than six times c to the third power":
6 * (c^3) - 1
because in the proper order of operations, after parenthesis you first do exponents, then multiplication and division, then addition and subtraction. Keeping this order clear is critical to getting the right answer.
Many people will mistakenly write "6c^3-1" when they mean "six times c to the three-minus-oneth power," which would be properly expressed as:
6*c^(3-1) or simply
6c^(3-1)
This becomes really important when you have variables in the exponents (because after all, who would write "6c^(3-1)" when they meant "6c^2" ?), such as:
6c^3-n -- because "6 * (c^3) - n" is VERY different from "6 * c^(3-n)"
