Why does copied text using Control C appear as a graphic image when pasted into Microsoft Excel?

It depends on what you're copying from. I often have this kind of problem if copying text from a website or email.

I get around it by using Firefox's "copy as plain text" extension.

If you don't use Firefox, you can get around it by first pasting into Notepad and then copying from that and pasting into Excel. It will then be plain text.

Some sites have nested images that appear as plain text. That could be one reason.

Other than that, you could paste it first in Notepad (as was suggested). This helps clear up the formatting of the text and when pasted adapts to the destination's formatting.
