zips their lips when I ask re:backup.....they claim sync only. But they do mention copy and paste (pc to ext drive) but will it perform like a true restore when pasted back? If you know the answer, you know microsoft must own stock in Compact disc manufacturing since they don't support external devices and it would take a truck load of CDs to do a backup

You should not need to backup the whole drive. You mainly need the data. Since most of this is in your documents folders you could simply copy the whole folder to the external. Even if you do backup the whole drive, it will not help you recover programmes after a serious data loss, you will need to r-load them to get the correct registry settings for them to run.
